Combat Displays Announces Environmentally Sealed Display Contract Award

BOWIE, MD (November 7,2008)

Combat Displays announced today that it has been awarded a contract for $1.6 million from the Office of Naval Research. The Vertical Lift Center of Excellence (VLCOE) at the Fleet Readiness Center, East, (FRC-East) Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina will be the recipient of the new technology. Under the terms of the contract, Combat Displays will design a 6 inch x 8 inch, environmentally sealed, helicopter cockpit display. As the mainstay display of both the commercial and military aviation markets, Combat Displays’ design concept will modernize the 6 inch x 8 inch display by incorporating newly developed technology enhancements, using proprietary digital, solid state, projection display technology that includes improved SCRAM Technologies® Light Emitting Diode (LED) light engines and screen technology.

The military’s vertical lift community is challenged with operating in severe environments from harsh, hot, dusty desert environments to the salt air laden environment of shipboard operations. The environmental toll on current displays is a cost driver which impacts the current generation of displays. Combat Displays has made great strides with its unique environmentally sealed designs that will not only significantly reduce weight, power, and thermal considerations, but also improve day time brightness and night time dimming capabilities.

Combat Displays’ unique design goal is to create a totally environmentally sealed, easily manufactured, ruggedized display with modular components. A follow on objective of this effort will be to prepare for the initial production of prototype displays that will undergo complete air worthiness testing.
